Global Schools is an initiative led by the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network in support of UNESCO’s Global Action Program on Education for Sustainable Development. Its mission is to empower schools and teachers globally to educate students on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Global Citizenship. The vision of the program is to generate interest about sustainable development in schools in an effort to educate and engage students with the SDGs and Global Citizenship and to encourage them to prioritize the goals in their lifestyles, behaviors, education and professional careers as these goals provide a framework for a better world for children. The program aims to do this by transforming learning environments globally and making schools the hubs of education and leadership on sustainable development, ultimately becoming vehicles for empowering and mobilizing students and young people to help implement the SDGs in their communities.

As Project Officer, Communication, generally, you will support the coordination of Global School's social media presence across channels, working to promote our content on each platform to increase engagement, global reach, and visibility.


The primary responsibilities of the Project Officer include but are not limited to:

  • Support in providing timely and relevant viewership reports to ensure goals are met in terms of social media communications.
  • Monitor our social media channels on Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, and Instagram, reviewing the communications inboxes to ensure responsiveness to reader questions and comments.
  • Support the creation, development, and implementation of social media campaigns to increase GSP's social media followers and newsletter subscribers.
  • Contribute creative ideas to grow the quality and reach of the digital distribution efforts of our articles, newsletters, and multimedia content.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of a communications strategy.
  • Perform other communications duties as needed.
  • Monitor the Education for Sustainable Development space, seeking videos, images, infographics, news, etc., that can be featured on the GS website and social media channels.
  • Identify barriers to effective outreach, including identifying innovative and creative ways to communicate with Global Schools’ audience that spans various cultures and languages.


  • Excellent command of the English language, including writing, speaking and listening.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and a proven track record of writing and/or journalism projects.
  • Ability to adapt and navigate through the ever-changing digital space.
  • Knowledge and enthusiasm for social media.
  • Passion for and prior experience in journalism, editorial, technical writing, youth engagement, communications, education, and/or sustainability.
  • Knowledge of sustainable development and passion for the mission of Global Schools, including the pursuit of the Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement on climate change.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage several workflows simultaneously; ability to work autonomously, take initiatives, problem-solve, and work proactively.
  • Proven team player with excellent interpersonal skills and ability to coordinate and manage workflows simultaneously; ability to motivate and mobilize others across various regions, cultures and work streams behind a global mission.
  • Strong computer skills and experience working with various communications and management software (i.e. Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, Youtube, WhatsApp, Buffer, Google Suite, Twitter, Canva, etc). Ability to adapt to new tools.
  • Ability to commit at least 10 hours per week to this role with room for flexibility.

  • Location: This position will be remote.
  • Hours: This position requires at least 10 hours per week.
  • Training: The candidate is required to complete all online induction courses and complete the Global Schools onboarding process.
  • Supervision: This position is supervised by the Project Lead, Communications, of Global Schools.
  • Compensation: This position is voluntary (Unpaid).
  • Duration of Position: January 2023 - December 2023. This position requires a minimum commitment of 12 months, with a 3-month probation period.
  • Start Date: January 2023.
